Summer
Youth Employment Program (SYEP)
SYEP is a 7-week
employment program that serves youth ages 14-24. The goal of the
program is to provide community youth with summer employment and
educational experiences that build on their individual strengths,
talents and interests.
While SYEP is an
employment program, participants also attend the following
educational workshops: work readiness, financial literacy, health
education, career awareness and exploring higher education options.
These workshops offer vital information that will help participants
beyond their work experience. SYEP is a great program that offers
opportunities to learn and earn.
Interested youth must
submit an application that is entered in the Department of Youth and
Community Development’s (DYCD) lottery system. If the application is
selected, youth are instructed to present the required support
documents; which include: working papers, proof of address, social
security card, proof of family income and if applicable proof of
selective service registration.
GRYC offers a variety of
interesting jobs in various employment sectors. Our participants
work as camp counselors at GRYC’s day camps, clericals in law
offices, schools and government offices, neighborhood beautification
aides at parks, recreational aides at the YMCA and other community
based organizations, community outreach workers at senior citizen
centers, teachers assistants at day care centers and stock/sales
clerks at neighborhood businesses. Our work sponsors provide
nurturing work environments that support meaningful learning
experiences for the SYEP participants.
SYEP Kicks off with an
orientation that is held on the first day of the program.
Participants learn about program policies, time and attendance
procedures, debit card usage and expectations. At the end of the
summer, participants summarize their overall work experience and
GRYC continually receives rave reviews!
SYEP participants work 25
hours, Monday through Friday and earn the minimum wage.
